London Autism Group Charity is launching a drop-in autism community café for the Greek & Cypriot community
The London Autism Group Charity are launching a new drop-in autism community café scheme for the Greek and Greek Cypriot community of London, although all people from any background are welcome.
The community café will be at the Cypriot Community Centre in Wood Green every last Saturday of the month, at 11am-1pm. The charity is having the brief launch ceremony on 29th October at 10.45am where there will be time to meet the team, answer questions and take some photos.
The scheme is aimed at anyone with an interest or connection with autism and neurodiversity, including Autistics (of any age), parents, carers and allies. It is entirely free, with biscuits, cakes, drinks and sensory toys available, and no pre-registration required.
Regarding what the initiative is trying to achieve, Charity lead, and co-lead of this initiative, Dr Chris Papadopoulos said: “Up to now, there haven’t been any clear and regular opportunities for Greek Autistics – and the wider Greek community – to regularly come together in a safe, inclusive place so they can meet others, relax in a friendly and welcoming space, and, really importantly, feel less isolated. This is really important because autism isn’t something that is very openly discussed in the Greek community, the result of which can mean that autistic people feel misunderstood or rejected. So an initiative like this which has a clear focus on autism in the Greek community, and helps bring people together, can help with that.”
Ellie Kolatsi, a parent of an autistic child and co-lead of the initiative, said: “I am extremely excited to be involved in such a great initiative which is important to me and my family as my son is autistic. It is an opportunity for the Greek community who are autistic or carers of autistic people to connect with each other in a meaningful way. Our aim is to create a space for conversations to happen in a non-judgemental environment and where better than in the heart of our community, the Cypriot Community Centre. We are also fortunate to be able to share information and our experiences every first Thursday evening of the month on London Greek Radio who are also kindly supporting this initiative.”
Sophia Christophi, an autistic adult and co-lead of the initiative, said: “As a Greek Cypriot autistic adult, I have not had much opportunity to talk about autism within the community… until now! I am delighted to be part of this new initiative to help Greek and Greek Cypriots understand more about autism and to promote the social inclusion and acceptance of autistic people. It’s so important for people to have accurate information about autism, and we are fortunate to have a monthly All About Autism show on LGR where we will be discussing various autism-related topics. We extend our thanks to the Cypriot Community Centre for supporting the community café, which will be a great way of bringing people together.”

Cyprus clinched 16th place among 72 countries in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this month, winning 11 medals – two gold, three silver and six bronze.
The Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades took to Twitter congratulating Cyprus’ team medal haul, saying “Congratulations to our athletes for their excellent achievements and the 11 medals at the Commonwealth Games. Allow me to make a special reference to our ‘golden’ Elias Georgiou & Giorgos Balarsjishvili who raised our country to the highest podium.”
The Cyprus News Agency described Cyprus’ performance as “very satisfactory”, especially in view of the fact that there were no shooting events in Birmingham, where Cyprus had excelled at previous Commonwealth Games.
Georgios Balarjishvili won the gold in judo in the 66kg category, and Elias Georgiou also won the gold medal in gymnastics.
Anna Sokolova secured two silver medals in rhythmic gymnastics, and Sokratis Pilakouris one silver in gymnastics.
The six bronze medals were won by Alexandros Poursanidis in the hammer throw, Anna Sokolova in rhythmic gymnastics, plus the men’s gymnastics team (Marios Georgiou, Elias Georgiou, Georgios Angonas, Sokratis Pilakouris and Michalis Chari), also won bronze, and three bronze medals were won too by Marios Georgiou in gymnastics.
Team head Giorgos Papageorgiou told CNA that the team had achieved their target with the medals haul. Papageorgiou expressed great satisfaction saying that “a small island of one million population has managed to take 16th place among 72 countries, with 11 medals, two gold, three silver and six bronze.”
The Cypriot team celebrated their first ever Bronze medal, with a Cypriot-style feast at Birmingham-run Kouzina Greek.
Paul Polyviou, owner of Kouzina Greek, said: “It was an honour to welcome the Cyprus team to Kouzina and give them a taste of home here in Birmingham. It was an incredibly proud moment for Cyprus to win their first Bronze medal and I’m delighted that we were able to help them celebrate this momentous occasion”.
Cyprus has competed in ten previous Commonwealth Games, making their first appearance in 1978, and missing only one Games since, in 1986.
Birmingham handed over the Commonwealth Games mantle to the 2026 host, Melbourne.

![](http://lgr.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Nathalie-Miranda-Drops-First-Greek-Single-Xilia-Simadia-730x315.jpg)
London-based singer-songwriter Nathalie Miranda released her first single in Greek ‘Xilia Simada’ on all digital platforms worldwide.
‘Xilia Simadia’ (which translates to 1000 scars), has been described as a dramatic, empowering zeibekiko about healing from a bad breakup and breaking free to take revenge.
According to the British-Cypriot artist, “This song embodies everything I love about Greek music: it’s dramatic, over the top, and full of Mediterranean passion. I’m so proud to present my first Greek single. As a Greek Cypriot, I’ve dreamed of writing and recording a song in Greek for years. Even if you don’t speak Greek, you’ll feel the passion!”
The song has been played exclusively on LGR all this week ahead of its release on 1st July.
Written and recorded at Nathalie’s home studio, with an official video shot on an iPhone, the track is authentically homegrown with a superstar polish: with producer Harry K, who boasts credits on some of Greece’s biggest records.
You can follow Nathalie on instagram @nathaliemirandamusic and nathaliemiranda.com.

![](http://lgr.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/London-Cypriot-musician-enters-Love-Island-730x371.png)
London Cypriot singer-songwriter Antigoni Buxton has entered the “Love Island” villa on ITV 2’s reality dating programme.
The series, which is filmed in Mallorca, introduced Antigoni on Wednesday 22nd June.
Show bosses had teased the new “bombshell” twist on the previous night’s cliff-hanger.
The 26-year-old North London musician is a long-time friend of LGR and she impressed her fellow islanders, with one islander heard saying that Antigoni is a “ray of sunshine” and “on the friendship level she is lovely”.
It appears that her warmth and radiance also won her TV admirers with the programme’s fervent fan-base. Many avid viewers of the show had taken to Twitter to applaud her “good-natured vibes and positive energy”, instantly becoming a fan favourite of the show.
Antigoni was signed to Island Records when she was just 20 years old and has gone on to have a successful start to her music career.
Her latest single “Hit List” released last month, mixes R’n’B with Greek/Cypriot elements and has already entered London Greek Radio playlist in recent weeks.
Antigoni is the daughter of celebrity chef Tonia Buxton, who’s a regular guest on “Sunday Bunch” on TV.
Tonia is also the consultant chef at The Real Greek restaurants and the presenter of “My Greek Kitchen” and “My Cypriot Kitchen” on the Discovery Channel.
Antigoni previously dated 2018 contestant Jack Fowler for a few months, but their romance fizzled out.
Prior to dating Jack, Antgoni was in a nine-year relationship with her childhood sweetheart but they split so that she could focus on her music.
You can follow Antigoni on Instagram @antigoni, where she already boasts almost 140,000 followers.
It’s worth reminding everyone about something that Cypriots already know, and that is that the original “Love Island” is of course, Cyprus, the island of the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite!

![](http://lgr.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Pandemic-Nurse-Finally-Ties-the-Knot-730x367.png)
A nurse, who spent what should have been her wedding day, socially distanced from her intended groom, treating Covid-19 patients on the front line, has finally tied the knot after her wedding was postponed for two years.
Instead of walking down the aisle, Olivia Hall, spent the day working at University College Hospital but finally got hitched earlier this month to Alex Violaris, nephew of one of LGRs veteran presenters, Soulla Violaris.
Olivia and Alex officially celebrated the wedding of their dreams, after the pandemic complications postponed their big day, and took their vows in Greek Orthodox fashion on 6th May this year.
The wedding took place at The Twelve Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Hatfield, with an extravagant country-manor reception at Orsett Hall in Essex.
In an exclusive interview to London Greek Radio, the couple said, “We’re really happy that after two years, (727 days to be exact), we finally got married at the fourth attempt.”
Two years ago, LGR had reported that on the original date of the wedding, instead of Olivia wearing her wedding dress and walking down the aisle, she had to wear her nurse uniform and PPE working in A&E, helping those with Covid.
The story was subsequently covered by the Evening Standard, the Parikiaki newspaper and the BBC news.
Olivia and Alex told LGR that the whole occasion finally proved to be a lovely family affair as the wedding day went without any issues. The pair revealed to London Greek Radio that they had even hired a surprise act for their guests, which was a well-protected secret.
They told LGR, “The entertainment was provided by The Function Band with surprise guest, Stavros Flatley! We had to keep it a secret for two years. We had friends and family attend from all over the UK, Cyprus and Australia to celebrate with us, which helped make it the perfect day!”
London Greek Radio wish Olivia and Alex a very happy future together.
