Tasos was born in Cyprus and was a child there in the 60s, so was familiar with past laika songs as he’d listen to them on the radio along with his parents and siblings. Tasos moved to London as a child in 1968.
In 2006, Tasos decided to purchase a system that would transfer all his tapes to CD. His system also recorded vinyl records to CD and it was then that his real work began.
One day whilst visiting a vinyl record shop in Southgate, he enquired to see if any Greek records have ever passed their way. Tasos gave his phone number and informed them that if anyone offered to sell to them any Greek vinyl records, and if they were not interested in purchasing themselves, to pass his number on.
Around 4 months later Tasos received a call from a lady who had approximately 200 Greek records to sell to him. The lady also said she’d like Tasos to transfer them to CD for her as it was her and her late husband’s music and she wanted to cherish the memories. So Tasos did exactly that as a kind gesture for the lady.
The records that she gave Tasos were some of the best loved songs from his child hood. It then dawned on Tasos to advertise in Parikiaki newspaper as he wanted to buy more of these great records from our community, with the offer of copying them to CD, if they desired, so at least they wouldn’t lose the music they so loved.
Within a few months Tasos held a huge collection of over 6000 singles and over 2000 albums and is still adding to the collection.
Tasos then got a stall at the Cyprus Wine Festival, offering a service of transferring customers’ vinyl records to CD for them so they could enjoy the pleasure of Greek music as much as he has. The collection Tasos has is so vast that there were enough doubles for him to frame the most popular hits and sell to people for displaying on their wall.
With well over 50 years of past Greek music to catch up on, on vinyl record, you can imagine Tasos excitement every day of the music that he is still discovering. You can start from the 50s with Kazantzidis – Mbithikotsis, up to the most recent of Mitropanos and again Kazantzidis. You have the greats of in-between years like Katy Gray, Voula Palla, Giota Lydia, Voskopoulos. Parios up to Glikeria, Terzis – not to mention other never ending great singers. His love for these singers and their music is forever.
Now Tasos wants to share this love for this music with you and is here as a DJ on LGR.
“Tasos Record Collection” is on every Saturday night from 8 till 10
Tasos also organises regular trips, from the North London area, to over 30s disco party venues on his Mini bus every Friday, and some Saturdays. He has been doing this now for over 20 years.
