David Gest, the former husband of Liza Minnelli, has been found dead in a London hotel aged 62. The star, who was found dead at the Four Seasons hotel in Canary Wharf, is believed to have been recently suffering from pneumonia and high blood pressure, with one friend claiming he was disorientated from the drugs.
A source told The Mirror: “He seemed strung out and went off the radar at times. He was taking some really strong medication because he was suffering from nasty chest problems that just wouldn’t go away.”
The police have since confirmed they are treating the incident as ‘not suspicious’.
The 62-year-old married actress Liza Minnelli in March 2002, but they separated roughly 18 months later in 2003. He went on to sue her for $10 million claiming she had been physically abusive during their marriage. Liza denied the charges and the case was eventually dismissed. He was also known for being a close friend of the late Michael Jackson.
A statement was released on Tuesday afternoon confirming the sad news of the showbiz icon’s death.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called at 10.17 on Tuesday 12 April to the Four Seasons hotel, in Westferry Circus to reports of an unexplained death of a man in his 60s”.
Close friend Imad Handi also made a statement: “It is with great sadness that I can confirm that David Gest has died today.” Mr Handi added: “David was truly larger than life. He was not just a huge talent and a dear friend but a showbiz icon.”
David guest was also know for appearing on I’m A Celebrity and Celebrity Big Brother.
